The Toronto Maple Leafs have reportedly given the Colorado Avalanche permission to speak to assistant GM Kyle Dubas.

This report comes from Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. Dubas has been with the organization since the summer of 2014. It's unclear what role he's being interviewed for, but it's clear that the Avalanche need to upgrade their front office after the miserable season they had in 2016-17. It's not the first time Dubas has garnered interest from other teams. We'll see if it amounts to anything this time around.

William Nylander was named the tournament MVP at the 2017 World Hockey Championship.

Sweden won the gold medal over Canada on Sunday. Nylander finished the tournament with seven goals and 14 points in 10 games. The 21-year-old forward spent some time at center on the world stage, but the Leafs still intend for him to play on the wing next season. That should work out just fine for Nylader if he continues to play alongside Auston Matthews.

Dominic Toninato can become an unrestricted free agent on Aug. 16 if he doesn't sign with the Maple Leafs.

"Dom's a good player. Will teams be interested? Yes. There will be many teams interested in him," said agent Neil Sheehy. "The process right now is working with the Leafs. They hold his rights till Aug. 16. They have a lot of things that they're trying to figure out." The two sides plan to speak again on July 3, but Sheehy added that Toninato is not interested in an AHL deal. The fifth-round pick of the Leafs in 2012 had 29 points in 42 games with the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 2016-17.

Team Sweden defeated Finland 4-1 on Saturday in the Semi-Finals of the World Hockey Championship.

Sweden got goals form William, Alexander Edler, John Klingberg and Joakim Nordstrom, and were in the driver's seat for most of the game. Speaking after the match, Michael Nylander said his son William is a "much better" hockey player than he was. It's notable considering Michael picked up 79 and 83 points centering Jaromir Jagr with the New York Rangers. William, who leads the tournament with seven goals in nine contests, will face off against Toronto Maple Leafs teammate Mitch Marner tomorrow for the gold medal.

Matt Hunwick is eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer.

Hunwick had one goal and 19 points in 72 games during the 2016-17 campaign. He averaged just under 18 minutes of ice per match and played well on Toronto's penalty kill unit. Hunwick was also credited with 91 hits and 90 blocks. If he doesn't re-sign with the Leafs then it could open up a spot for newcomers like Calle Rosen and Andreas Borgman or someone on the Marlies.

Frederik Gauthier is expected to need six months to recover from a leg injury sustained on Saturday.

Gauthier has been playing for the Toronto Marlies in the AHL playoffs. Based on that timetable, he'll miss training camp and the start of the 2017-18 campaign. It's an unfortunate setback for the 22-year-old forward because he may have been able to earn a roster spot with the Leafs out of training camp. He had two goals, three points, and 23 penalty minutes in 21 NHL games this season.

Carl Grundstrom is expected to get some playing time during the AHL playoffs.

Grundstrom just joined the Marlies from the Swedish league playoffs after he signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs. "I think we will (play him)," said Marlies coach Sheldon Keefe. "We want to make sure he's comfortable and in a good spot. He was off the ice for a period of time, a week or so, and flies out here — all new systems, new teammates, new environment. We want to make sure he's ready." Keefe likes Grunstrom's well-rounded game and his competitiveness.

Nikita Zaitsev reportedly received a two-year, $11 million offer from the KHL's CSKA Moscow before he re-signed with Toronto.

Zaitsev made the transition from the KHL to NHL in 2016-17 and went on to record four goals and 36 points in 82 contests as a rookie with the Maple Leafs. He signed a seven-year, $31.5 million extension with Toronto so he won't be playing in the KHL anytime soon, but this report just goes to illustrate the kind of leverage he might have had during the negotiating process.
