Sammy Solis (elbow) is headed to extended spring training to ramp up the intensity of his rehab.

Solis played catch Tuesday without issue and could begin throwing off a mound this weekend at the Nationals' complex in West Palm Beach. He's been on the disabled list since mid-April with inflammation in his left elbow. The southpaw is trending toward a mid-June return.

Anthony Rendon had two homers, a double and five RBI as the Nationals crushed the Mariners 10-1 on Tuesday.

That's not quite three homers and 10 RBI, like he had last month against the Mets, but it does make him the third player this year with multiple two-homer, five-RBI games, joining Jay Bruce and teammate Bryce Harper. Rendon has seven homers and 29 RBI in 42 games.

Joe Ross pitched eight innings of one-run ball Tuesday to beat the Mariners in his return to the majors.

Ross was really strong early on, reaching the mid-90s with his fastball. His velocity dipped steadily as the night went along, but the effectively never waned. We'd still like to see him maintain that fastball longer into outings before recommending him especially vehemently, but he needs to be owned in mixed leagues regardless.

Stephen Drew (hamstring) has reported to extended spring training and could soon begin playing in games.

Drew has made very slow progress from a strained right hamstring, though manager Dusty Baker assured reporters last week that there has not been a significant setback. Drew could be ready for activation sometime next week if all goes well for him in West Palm Beach.

Nationals recalled RHP Joe Ross from Triple-A Syracuse.

Ross will rejoin the Nationals' starting rotation on Tuesday night against the Mariners after tossing seven innings of one-run ball in his last start with Triple-A Syracuse. The young right-hander has struggled this season at the major league level, but he still carries a fair amount of fantasy upside and he'll give owners two starts this week.

Nationals optioned OF Brian Goodwin to Triple-A Syracuse.

Goodwin batted just .188/.235/.313 in 10 games with Washington. The 26-year-old will go on serving as organizational outfield depth for the Nationals.

Joe Blanton (shoulder) played catch Tuesday.

As noted by Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post, Blanton was playing catch with teammate Sammy Solis (elbow) as both pitchers are working their way back from injuries. Blanton struggled to the tune of a 9.49 ERA through 12 1/3 innings before landing on the disabled list last week with right shoulder inflammation. The Nationals haven't mapped out a specific timetable for his return, but he's already moving in the right direction.

Sammy Solis (elbow) played catch Tuesday.

It's a step in the right direction for Solis, who is working his way back from elbow nerve inflammation. However, there's no clear timetable for his return.

The Nationals are calling up right-hander Joe Ross to start Tuesday against the Mariners.

Ross was surprisingly optioned to Triple-A Syracuse earlier this month, but his stint in the minors didn't last long. While he posted a 5.50 ERA over three starts in Triple-A, he threw seven innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts and one walk in his most recent outing. The 22-year-old had a 7.47 ERA over three starts prior to his demotion, but he's capable of much better if he's right and is worth picking up in fantasy leagues where he was dropped.

Daniel Murphy blasted his ninth home run of the season on Sunday, powering the Nationals to a 3-2 victory over the Braves in Atlanta.

Murphy got the scoring started in the ballgame, taking Braves' starter Jaime Garcia deep for a solo shot in the second inning. He also singled in the ballgame, finishing the afternoon 2-for-4. He's enjoying another terrific season offensively, slashing .327/.387/.576 with nine homers and 33 RBI.

Wilmer Difo went 1-for-4 with a triple and a run scored as the Nationals topped the Braves on Sunday afternoon in Atlanta.

Difo got the start in third base in this one with Anthony Rendon getting a day off. He has struggled at the plate in his limited action this season, hitting just .200/.268/.308 with one homer and five RBI.

Koda Glover locked down his third save of the season on Sunday, recording the final four outs against the Braves.

Glover was called upon to protect a one-run lead with a runner on second base in the eighth inning. After getting out of that jam, he was sent back out with a clean slate in the ninth and despite allowing a leadoff single, was able to get the job done. He now sports a 2.77 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 10/2 K/BB ratio through 12 innings on the season and may be the best bet for save chances at the moment in the Nationals' bullpen.
Sun, May 21, 2017 04:35:00 PM

Stephen Strasburg earned his fifth victory of the season on Sunday, limiting the Braves to two runs on five hits over 7 2/3 innings.

Strasburg racked up 11 strikeouts on the afternoon while issuing only one free pass. He carried a shutout bid into the eighth inning where Dansby Swanson's two-out, two-run double delivered the only damage against him and forced Strasburg from the outing. He now sports a 3.28 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 59/17 K/BB ratio through 60 1/3 innings on the season. Hell take on the Padres his next time out at home on Friday.
Sun, May 21, 2017 04:33:00 PM

Anthony Rendon is not in the Nationals' lineup Sunday.

He's just getting a day off. Wilmer Difo is filling in at third base. Matt Wieters is also receiving some rest, as Jose Lobaton is at catcher.

Trea Turner went 2-for-4 and drove in a run in Saturday's loss to the Braves.

He laced a single to right field to score pitcher Max Scherzer in the fifth inning. Turner is a rich source of RBI for a lead-off batter, especially considering he spent two weeks on the disabled list in April. He has a .243 batting average with four homers, 23 runs scored, 20 RBI and nine stolen bases through 32 games. He had a .342 batting average with 13 homers and 33 steals in 73 games as a rookie last year.
