Andrew Cashner yielded five runs in five innings Tuesday in a loss to the Red Sox.

Cashner walked four and threw two wild pitches. He has a 21/25 K/BB ratio after eight starts, and he's been incredibly lucky to sport a 3.18 ERA to this point.

Jeremy Jeffress gave up three runs and walked three while getting just one out Tuesday against the Red Sox.

If Jeffress had been throwing like he was last year, he probably would have been the choice to step in as the Rangers' closer when Sam Dyson lost the job. However, he has a 6.75 ERA and an ugly 9/11 K/BB ratio in 17 1/3 innings to date. Much like they did with Dyson, the Rangers might need to stick Jeffress on the DL for a spell.

Joey Gallo collected his 14th homer and his fifth double Tuesday against the Red Sox.

Even though he's hitting just .193, Gallo still has the best OPS among Rangers regulars, besting Nomar Mazara by 40 points (.839 to .798). As long as he doesn't falter, he should move to left field once Adrian Beltre comes off the DL.

Tyson Ross (shoulder) threw five scoreless innings Tuesday in a rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock.

Ross needed just 73 pitches to make it through those five shutout innings, yielding only two hits. The right-hander could be cleared to join the Rangers' starting rotation after just two more minor league appearances, assuming they go as smoothly as his start on Tuesday. He last pitched in a major league game on Opening Day in 2016.

Cole Hamels (oblique) played catch Tuesday for the first time since landing on the disabled list.

A positive first step for the rehabbing left-hander, who has been out since May 2 with a strained right oblique. Hamels is not expected to return to the Rangers' rotation until early July.

Jose Leclerc (finger) could be cleared to begin throwing off a mound later this week.

He'll first have to make it through back-to-back flat-ground sessions on Wednesday and Thursday. The 23-year-old has been on the disabled list since May 8 because of tendinitis in his right index finger. Leclerc was sporting a 2.31 ERA and 18 strikeouts through 11 2/3 innings this season out of the Rangers' bullpen.

Adrian Beltre (calf) could begin playing in extended spring training games this weekend.

There is a checkup with team doctors scheduled for Thursday. Beltre has been running for a week without issue, though not quite at full intensity. The veteran third baseman still has a number of hurdles to clear and probably isn't going to make his 2017 debut until sometime near early-to-mid June.

Mike Napoli clobbered his 10th home run of the season on Sunday as the Rangers dispatched the Tigers 5-2.

Napoli finished the night 2-for-3 and also drew a pair of walks. His mammoth blast into the camera well in center field in the fifth inning traveled an estimated 452 feet. Even with the strong day at the plate though, Napoli is still hitting just .188/.262/.416 with 10 homers and 23 RBI on the season.

Jonathan Lucroy went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI as the Rangers topped the Tigers on Sunday night in Detroit.

Lucroy got the Rangers on the board with an RBI single in the first inning, then he capped off the scoring with an RBI double in the ninth. His bat has started to heat up after his move to the cleanup spot in the lineup, and he's now hitting .277/.320/.412 with three long balls and 12 RBI.

Keone Kela slammed the door on the Tigers in the ninth inning on Sunday, retiring all three hitters he faced to preserve a three-run advantage.

Closer Matt Bush was apparently unavailable after throwing 33 pitches on Friday night, so it was Kela who got the chance to work in the game's highest leverage situation. He was up to the task, striking out two in his perfect frame to secure his second career save.

Yu Darvish wasn't at his best on Sunday, but still managed to earn his fifth victory of the season by limiting the Tigers to two runs on five hits over five innings.

Darvish racked up seven strikeouts on the night while walking four. He needed 105 pitches to battle through his five frames, but was able to limit the damage overall and turn in a relatively solid start. Now 5-2 on the season, the right-hander owns a 2.83 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 68/27 K/BB ratio through 63 2/3 innings on the year. He'll take on the Blue Jays his next time out in Toronto on Saturday.
Sun, May 21, 2017 11:48:00 PM

Joey Gallo is not in the Rangers' starting lineup for Sunday night's showdown against the Tigers.

He'll take a seat with southpaw Matt Boyd on the mound. Pete Kozma is starting in his place at the hot corner and will bat eighth for the Rangers on Sunday.

Rougned Odor was hitless in three at-bats with a strikeout Saturday in Detroit.

Odor's averaged slipped back under the Mendoza line, as he is slashing just .199/.255/.351. The second baseman hasn't exactly torn it up over his career, posting a .258 average, but he has really taken a step back at the plate this season with a WAR at just 0.2. That's his lowest mark since a 0.1 set in his rookie season of 2014.

Jonathan Lucroy belted a solo home run in four trips to the plate Saturday in Detroit.

Lucroy has hit safely in a season-high eight straight games, as he continues to tear it up in the month of May. He is hitting a robust .353 (18-for-51) with four doubles, two homers, six RBI and a .926 OPS while striking out just two times. Lucroy also has an RBI in four consecutive outings.

A.J. Griffin was tagged for nine runs, nine hits and a walk while striking out just three batters over 3 1/3 innings in a loss Saturday in Detroit.

The Rangers entered the game 6-0 over Griffin's first six outings of 2017. Griffin's ERA ballooned from 3.15 to 5.02 after the atrocious outing, as he threw just 61 of his 88 pitches for strikes. When he did put it over the plate, it was up in the zone and the Tigers teed off on him for four home runs. He'll look to bounce back against the struggling Blue Jays in Toronto next Friday.
