Jhoulys Chacin lasted just two-thirds of an inning and gave up seven runs Tuesday against the Mets.

Chacin gave up hits to eight of the 10 batters he faced. He had a 3.28 ERA in his previous eight starts, so he's not going anywhere. Still, this makes three times this season in which he's given up at least seven runs.

Ryan Schimpf homered, walked and struck out against the Mets on Tuesday.

Of course he did. After seemingly briefly losing the third-base gig to Cory Spangenberg, Schimpf seems to have the advantage there again now. It helps that Spangenberg has been pretty awful. Schimpf is hitting just .169, but he still has nearly 200 points of OPS on Spangenberg (.746 to .553).

An MRI taken Tuesday on Trevor Cahill's right shoulder showed no major structural damage.

Cahill was sent for the exam after experiencing lingering soreness in his right shoulder while attempting to play catch from 75 feet this weekend. He'll be shut down from throwing for the next 10-14 days and will then have to begin a rehab program from scratch. It's doubtful we see him again on a major league mound before mid-to-late June.

Padres manager Andy Green has confirmed that pitching prospect Dinelson Lamet will be called up to start Thursday against the Mets.

Lamet has registered a 3.23 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 50/20 K/BB ratio in 39 innings (eight starts) this season with Triple-A El Paso. The poor command makes him a risky play in standard mixed fantasy leagues, but the 24-year-old right-hander carries intriguing long-term upside. He could be up for multiple turns if Thursday's debut goes relatively smoothly.

Padres optioned RHP Jose Valdez to Triple-A El Paso.

The move clears a spot for Carlos Asuaje on the active roster. Valdez, who was claimed off waivers from the Angels earlier this month, was just called up on Saturday and threw 41 pitches in relief in his lone appearance.

Padres recalled INF/OF Carlos Asuaje from Triple-A El Paso.

This confirms a report from FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. Acquired as part of the Craig Kimbrel trade, Asuaje was batting .222/.335/.319 with one homer and 20 RBI over 39 games this season with Triple-A El Paso. He'll function in a utility role.

Craig Mish of Fantasy Sports Radio reports that the Padres are calling up prospect right-hander Dinelson Lamet.

The expectation, according to Mish, is that Lamet will make his major league debut Thursday against the Mets. The 24-year-old owns a 3.23 ERA and 50/20 K/BB ratio in 39 innings over eight starts with Triple-A El Paso this season. The walks are a concern and some have speculated that he could be bullpen-bound in the long-term, but he has shown an ability to miss bats. He could be worth a try in deeper fantasy formats.

Hector Sanchez (foot) has experienced a setback during his minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A El Paso.

Sanchez, who went down with a foot contusion earlier this month, began a rehab assignment on Friday and went 2-for-9 with two walks over the weekend. No word on the severity of the setback or when he'll be able to return to action.

Padres prospect Luis Urias picked up three more hits on Sunday for Double-A San Antonio.

Could this be the best Urias? Probably not, but Luis is slowly becoming one of the best infield prospects in baseball. He's now hitting .344 for the Missions, and he's doing it as a teenager. If he can stay at shortstop he's a perennial All-Star, but no matter where he plays, he's relevant because he can really, really hit.

The Padres are calling up infielder-outfielder Carlos Asuaje, reports FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

The Padres haven't confirmed. Asuaje, a product of the Craig Kimbrel trade, appeared in seven games with the Padres last season and was batting .222/.335/.319 with one homer and 20 RBI over 39 games this season with Triple-A El Paso. The 25-year-old has mostly played second base in the minors, but he also has experience between third base and left field.

Craig Mish of Fantasy Sports Radio reports that the Padres are considering calling up pitching prospect Dinelson Lamet to join their rotation this week.

Lamet, 24, has put together a 3.23 ERA and 50/20 K/BB ratio over 39 innings at Triple-A El Paso this season. He has control issues but also boasts a nice arm and could potentially be worth a look in deeper fantasy formats. He was ranked before the season by MLB.com as the Padres' No. 10 prospect.

Ryan Schimpf went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's win over the Diamondbacks.

Schimpf socked a solo homer off Zack Godley to lead off the fifth inning. The dinger was his 10th of the season. Despite respectable enough counting stats (the 10 homers, 20 RBI), the 29-year-old third baseman is hitting just .165/.303/.417 this season.
Sun, May 21, 2017 08:14:00 PM

Hunter Renfroe went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI single in Sunday's win over the Diamondbacks.

The double was Renfroe's eighth of the season. In addition, the 25-year-old outfielder is slashing .218/.275/.412 with eight homers and 19 RBI over the course of 45 games played. His almost complete lack of contact (Sunday's three-hit showing aside) puts a real cap on his fantasy upside, though the power output has been there.
Sun, May 21, 2017 08:10:00 PM

Clayton Richard was marvelous in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks, surrendering just one run on five hits while tossing a complete game.

Outside of a Chris Iannetta solo home run in the third inning, Richard kept the Diamondbacks off the scoreboard. He struck out six without walking a batter in the contest. While this was a very strong performance, consistency has not been Richard's forte of late. He has allowed at least five runs in three of his last six starts, but just four total runs in his other three outings combined over that period. On the whole, he holds a 4.31 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over the course of 10 starts. A tough home showdown with the Nationals awaits him next time he takes to the mound.

Padres designated INF Luis Sardinas for assignment.

Sardinas lost out on the starting shortstop job this spring but stuck on in a utility role. He hit just .163/.226/.163 in 53 plate appearances with the Padres. There's a decent chance he passes through waivers unclaimed and continues to provide organizational depth.
