Tyler Glasnow held the Braves to two runs over six innings Tuesday.

Glasnow surrendered nine hits – including a solo home run to Matt Adams – and also walked a pair, but he managed to hold Atlanta relatively in check. He also did his part and then some at the plate, picking up three singles in three at-bats. Glasnow remains volatile for fantasy purposes, as his penchant for free passes can result in blowup starts at any time. He faces the Mets on Sunday.

Tony Watson blew his second save of the season Tuesday in Atlanta.

Ender Inciarte reached on a one-out infield single and the scored the game-tying run on a Nick Markakis double. After an intentional walk to Matt Kemp, Matt Adams slashed a walk-off RBI single. Watson has been pretty shaky so far in May, allowing seven runs over nine appearances.

Jordy Mercer mashed a solo homer and drove in three runs Tuesday against the Braves.

Mercer took R.A. Dickey over the boards in the sixth inning and has now reached base in five of nine career plate appearances versus the knuckleballer. He then put the Pirates ahead in the top of the ninth following a long rain delay, but Pittsburgh coughed up the lead in the bottom of the frame. Mercer is sporting an unappetizing .215/.323/.299 batting line on the season.

Gregory Polanco (hamstring) took on-field batting practice Tuesday evening.

He also took additional hacks in an indoor cage and did some light running. "I feel so good," Polanco said after the workout. "I'm going to get back in the lineup soon." It sounds like the 25-year-old outfielder could be activated from the disabled list this weekend, forgoing a minor league rehab assignment.

Jameson Taillon (cancer) threw 25 pitches off a mound Tuesday.

Taillon has made encouraging progress from his May 8 surgery for suspected testicular cancer, though Pirates trainer Todd Tomczyk cautioned Tuesday that this is still very much a day-to-day situation. There's no real timetable for Taillon's return to the active major league roster.

Gerrit Cole was lit up for five earned runs over 4 2/3 innings Monday in a loss to the Braves.

Cole didn't have it in this one, registering just two strikeouts while surrendering a walk and 10 hits, including two home runs. The right-hander watched his ERA jump from 2.84 to 3.36, and he now stands 2-5 on a last-place Pirates team with an overall record of 20-25. Cole, a potential trade candidate this summer, will get the Mets at home next.

Jordy Mercer was removed from Monday's game against the Braves due to discomfort in his right hand.

Mercer is considered day-to-day. He sustained the injury when he was hit in the hand by a groundball. Look for him to return to the Pirates' lineup in a day or two.

David Freese was ejected from Monday's game against the Braves for arguing a called third strike in the fourth inning.

His manager, Clint Hurdle, was also given the gate for arguing the same call. Freese finished the night 0-for-2. Alen Hanson replaced him in the lineup with Josh Harrison shifting over to cover the hot corner.

Clint Hurdle was ejected from Monday's game against the Braves for arguing balls and strikes.

Hurdle took exception to a called third strike on David Freese and vehemently voiced that opinion to the home plate umpire. He'll catch the rest of Monday's action from the clubhouse.

Pirates prospect Steven Brault pitched seven shutout innings on Sunday for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Brault scattered three hits; walking one and striking out four in the outing. The left-hander has excellent control, and there's three usable pitches in his left arm. He's not going to be a fantasy stalwart, but he certainly has good enough stuff and command to pitch in a rotation for someone.

Tony Watson tallied his 10th save of the year Sunday in the Pirates' 1-0 defeat of the Phillies.

Watson picked up a strikeout in an easy 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning to keep the Bucs' combined shutout intact. The left-hander has a 2.75 ERA and 14/7 K/BB ratio in 19 2/3 innings this season as Pittsburgh's closer.

Chad Kuhl worked five scoreless innings in the Pirates' win over the Phillies on Sunday.

Kuhl yielded just one hit, a harmless double to Maikel Franco in the top of the fifth inning. The right-hander issued two walks but struck out five before leaving with the scored tied 0-0. He lowered his ERA from 6.69 to 5.85 in the no-decision.

Ivan Nova surrendered three runs in 7 1/3 innings to beat the Phillies 6-3 on Saturday.

He gave up a run in the first inning, then fired five shutout innings before allowing individual runs in the seventh and eighth frames. He gave up nine base hits without issuing a walk and he notched three strikeouts on the afternoon. Nova has enjoyed nothing but success since joining the Pirates mid-season last year. His record improves to 4-3 with a 2.63 ERA in nine starts this year. He is not a big strikeout guy but is very stingy with the base-on-balls. He has 36 strikeouts against just four walks in 61 2/3 innings.

Tony Watson tossed a clean ninth inning to earn a save against the Phillies on Saturday.

He was protecting a three-run lead while facing the bottom of the Phillies' lineup and he set them down in order. He carries a 2.89 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings. He has two wins, no losses, nine saves and one blown save.
Sat, May 20, 2017 07:37:00 PM
