Howie Kendrick (oblique) is set to begin a minor league rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Kendrick received clearance to play in minor league games after taking outdoor batting practice on Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park. He's been out since April 15, so the Phillies will probably have him stay at Triple-A through the weekend to get properly tuned up. Kendrick was batting .333/.395/.487 over his first 43 plate appearances this season with the Phils. The versatile veteran should get something close to everyday playing time when he returns.

Zach Eflin gave up eight runs and three homers in six innings Tuesday in a loss to the Rockies.

Eflin had been serviceable to date because he managed to give up a modest four homers in 36 innings. Seven homers in 42 innings seems more like what should have been expected, given his poor strikeout rate and lack of ability to induce grounder after grounder. He might hang as a fifth starter, but he doesn't have much upside beyond that.

Andrew Knapp hit his second homer and walked Tuesday against the Rockies.

The Phillies are searching all over for offense and Knapp has been very good, hitting .261 with an .848 OPS in 46 at-bats. Still, starting catcher Cameron Rupp hasn't been a problem -- he has a .776 OPS -- and there's not really any way for the Phillies to play both of them. Knapp figures to remain a backup.

Howie Kendrick (oblique) could begin a minor league rehab assignment later this week.

Kendrick took outdoor batting practice Tuesday for the first time since straining an oblique muscle in mid-April. He still has some boxes to check before the Phillies can map out an exact timetable for his return to the active roster. Aaron Altherr has run away with the Phillies' starting left field job over the last month.

Phillies recalled LHP Adam Morgan from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Morgan was just sent down when Aaron Nola returned, but he's back now that Daniel Nava (hamstring) has been placed on the disabled list. The 27-year-old has allowed seven runs over six innings of work with the Phils this season.

Phillies placed OF Daniel Nava on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to May 21, with a left hamstring strain.

Nava suffered the injury last Friday and will require an extended absence. The Phillies have called up left-hander Adam Morgan to take his place on the active roster.

Michael Saunders is out of Tuesday's lineup against the Rockies.

Saunders is hitless over his last four games and owns an ugly .227/.273/.383 batting line through 41 games on the year. Phillies manager Pete Mackanin is giving Ty Kelly a shot in left field on Monday, with Aaron Altherr starting in right field.
Tue, May 23, 2017 03:11:00 PM

Maikel Franco is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Rockies.

Maybe it's not a bad idea to give him a breather. Franco went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts on Monday and owns a disappointing .221/.281/.377 batting line through 41 games this season. Andres Blanco will start at third base.
Tue, May 23, 2017 03:04:00 PM

Phillies released LHP Mario Hollands.

Hollands had a 4.15 ERA and 9/12 K/BB ratio over 13 innings with Double-A Reading this season. The 28-year-old made 50 appearances out of the Phillies' bullpen in 2014, but he hasn't been able to make it back to the majors since his Tommy John surgery.
Tue, May 23, 2017 12:03:00 PM

Jerad Eickhoff fell to 0-5 after giving up four runs in six innings Monday against the Rockies.

Eickhoff was really unlucky in going 0-1 with a 2.55 ERA over his last four starts, but he has a 6.67 ERA while going 0-3 in the last five. Overall, the Phillies are 1-8 in his starts. A Triple-A stint still doesn't seem necessary, but with the Phillies perhaps looking to shake things up, he can't take anything for granted right now.
Mon, May 22, 2017 10:50:00 PM

Cesar Hernandez went 0-for-4 in the loss to the Rockies on Monday.

Pete Mackanin has been doing a lot of lineup rearranging lately, but one thing he hasn't tried is taking Hernandez out of the leadoff spot. Hernandez has cooled off after a strong April, but he still seems like the right choice at the top now, even if he has hit .193 in his last 15 games.

Phillies second base prospect Jesmuel Valentin needs season-ending surgery to repair a separated shoulder.

Valentin suffered the injury last week. The 23-year-old batted a disappointing .229/.282/.292 in his first 104 plate appearances this season for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Phillies OF prospect Nick Williams homered on Sunday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

It's the fifth homer of the season for Williams. After struggling for most of 2016, he has unfortunately continued that trend. The approach remains a mess, and he's not making enough hard contact to compensate for the lack of walks. At this point, Williams looks more like a reclamation project than an actual prospect. That's disappointing.
Mon, May 22, 2017 02:48:00 PM

Phillies prospect Ben Lively threw six shutout innings on Sunday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

In those six shutout innings, Lively gave up just five hits, walked no one and struck out nine. The no walks aren't surprising, as he's put just five hitters on base via walk the entire season. He doesn't have elite stuff, but he should throw enough strikes to pitch in the back of a rotation. Whether or not that makes him fantasy relevant is another question.
Mon, May 22, 2017 02:07:00 PM

Phillies prospect Scott Kingery went 4-for-5 with two homers on Sunday for Double-A Reading.

Kingery also scored four times. A 2015 second-round selection, Kingery has been sensational in the Eastern League in 2017, and now owns a 1.018 OPS. He also is a plus runner, and he's capable of stealing 20-plus bases a season. Add in his ability to play a quality second base, and you have yourself a fine middle-infield fantasy prospect. He should get a chance to play in Triple-A soon.
