Jordan Montgomery spun 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball but took a loss Tuesday against the Royals.

Montgomery deserved a better fate in this one. He got tagged by Lorenzo Cain with a solo shot with one out in the seventh, and Yankees manager Joe Girardi only let the left face one more batter. He then brought in Adam Warren, who promptly gave up a single and a homer to cough up the lead. He didn’t get a win, but Montgomery was great with just two hits and no walks allowed to go along with six strikeouts. The lefty faces the A’s at home on Sunday.

Chris Carter belted a solo homer and drew a walk in Tuesday's loss to the Royals.

Carter's blast over the left field wall in the fifth inning put the Yankees out to a 2-0 lead, but they were outscored 6-0 the rest of the way. The big first baseman has now gone deep in each of the first two games of the series.

Gary Sanchez is out of the Yankees' lineup Tuesday against the Royals.

It sounds like a routine day off for the young backstop. Austin Romine will start behind the dish and catch left-hander Jordan Montgomery.

Brett Gardner is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Royals.

Gardner hit another homer on Monday, but he'll take a seat Tuesday against left-hander Danny Duffy. Aaron Hicks will start in left field and bat second.

Michael Pineda pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball in a victory over the Royals on Monday.

This makes eight straight starts in which Pineda has allowed no more than three earned runs. He hasn't excellent every time out, but his only poor outing was his season debut versus the Rays. He's now 5-2 with a 3.35 ERA.
Mon, May 22, 2017 11:05:00 PM

Tyler Clippard picked up his fifth hold with a scoreless eighth inning Monday against the Royals.

It looked like Clippard's tenure as a reliable setup man was winding down at this time last year, but he's been great since rejoining the Yankees, particularly this season. He's struck out 27 while giving up just three earned runs in 19 2/3 innings.

Brett Gardner hit his ninth homer Monday off the Royals' Jason Vargas.

It's already the third-highest homer total of Gardner's career. He hit 17 in 2014 and 16 in 2015, but he hasn't reached double figures in any other season. That's about to change, obviously.

Greg Bird (ankle) took some dry swings Monday.

He had been slated to hit off a tee and take soft-toss, but he'll now do that Tuesday instead. Bird also resumed running recently, as well. He'll need a rehab assignment before being activated but is making nice progress.

The Yankees promoted top prospect Gleyber Torres to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The 20-year-old, widely regarded as one of the top prospects in all of baseball, made quick work of Double-A Trenton, slashing .277/.363/.504 with four homers and 18 RBI in 31 games. At this rate, he could debut with the Yankees this season.

Didi Gregorius finished 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored Sunday as the Yankees topped the Rays 3-2.

Gregorius swatted four singles, and one of them in the top of the second inning plated Jacoby Ellsbury for the Yankees' first run of the afternoon. The 27-year-old shortstop has managed an impressive .322/.355/.402 batting line in 21 games since returning from his late-spring shoulder strain.

Dellin Betances notched his second save of the season Sunday in the Yankees' win over the Rays.

Betances entered in the eighth inning and struck out three of the four batters he faced to close out the Yankees' 3-2 victory. He can provide the value of a top-tier fantasy closer while Aroldis Chapman (shoulder) is on the shelf. Betances owns a sparkling 0.66 ERA and 25/9 K/BB ratio in 13 2/3 innings this season for New York.

CC Sabathia allowed just two runs -- one earned -- over five innings Sunday in the Yankees' defeat of the Rays.

The first run came in the bottom of the first inning when a pickoff throw from catcher Gary Sanchez went awry and allowed Corey Dickerson to score from second base. Derek Norris then hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. Sabathia gave up just four total hits and issued only one walk while striking out six. He'll carry a 4-2 record and 4.62 ERA into his next start at home versus the Athletics.

Greg Bird (ankle) will take soft-toss and hit off a tee Monday.

Bird resumed running recently, as well. He'll need a rehab assignment before being activated and is still likely at least a couple weeks away from a return.

Yankees recalled RHP Bryan Mitchell from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Mitchell has put up a 6.35 ERA across nine relief appearances with the big club this season. He'll work in the middle innings.
Sun, May 21, 2017 12:17:00 PM

Yankees optioned RHP Giovanny Gallegos to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Gallegos held a 5.06 ERA over four relief appearances in his first stint in the majors. Bryan Mitchell is replacing him in the Yankees' bullpen.
