Joe Mauer is getting the day off Wednesday.

Kennys Vargas will start at first base and bat fifth in the matinee game against the Orioles. Mauer went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts on Tuesday and is slashing just .266/.338/.367 in 38 total games this season.

Ervin Santana became the first pitcher to reach two shutouts this season on Tuesday, holding the Orioles off the scoreboard in a 2-0 victory.

Dylan Bundy was good in this one, but Santana was better. Singles from Welington Castillo and Jonathan Schoop and a couple walks were all the Orioles were able to muster off the right-hander. Santana struck out six batters on the night, needing just 105 pitches to complete the gem. The righty's other shutout came back on April 15 against the White Sox. Santana's 1.80 ERA is the best mark in baseball, and his 0.83 WHIP is second only to Chris Sale's 0.79 mark. He'll face the Astros next.

Kennys Vargas notched a pair of doubles in Tuesday's win over the Orioles.

Both two-baggers came off of starter Dylan Bundy. It was the first two-hit game since May 3 for Vargas, who has been struggling of late and finding himself on the bench fairly often as a result.

Brian Dozier smacked a solo homer in Tuesday's win over the Orioles.

Dozier smashed a line-drive longball over the left field wall off of Dylan Bundy with two outs in the seventh. It was one of just six hits and two runs on the night for the Twins, but that was enough for Ervin Santana. Dozier has six dingers on the year.

Miguel Sano went 4-for-6 with a homer and three RBI as the Twins topped the Orioles 14-7 on Monday.

Sano had gone eight straight games without a homer, but even during that stretch, he hit .300 with a .382 OBP. He's been an awesome force since day one this year, and we see no reason to expect that to change.

Kyle Gibson surrendered six runs over five innings in his return to the majors, yet he still earned a win over the Orioles on Monday.

Gibson was 0-4 with an 8.20 ERA in six starts before the Twins sent him down. He's not fixed, but we're not sure there was much to fix in the first place; he just doesn't look like a very good pitcher at this point.

Max Kepler went 3-for-6 with a homer, a double and four RBI against the Orioles on Monday.

Kepler's solid production hasn't resulted in much fantasy value yet, but there are certainly worse choices as a fourth or fifth outfielder in mixed leagues. He's capable of doing a little bit of everything, as evidenced by his .271 average, five homers and three steals.
Mon, May 22, 2017 11:13:00 PM

Jorge Polanco went 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI against the Orioles on Monday.

Even though he's been really good at avoiding the strikeout, Polanco's season has been pretty meh so far, as he's hitting .268 with just two homers in 137 at-bats. Still, his defense at shortstop has been better than expected, especially considering that Twins gave up on him at that position going into last year.

Twins recalled RHP Kyle Gibson from Triple-A Rochester.

Gibson will rejoin the rotation on Monday in Baltimore. He was sent down earlier this month after posting an 8.20 ERA over six starts, but he earned another shot after holding a 2.92 ERA in two outings for Rochester. Gibson is a poor bet for fantasy purposes.
Mon, May 22, 2017 05:37:00 PM

Twins placed RHP Phil Hughes on the 10-day disabled list with right biceps tendinitis.

There had seemed to be some worry that Hughes might have structural damage in his shoulder, so this is relatively good news. Still, he'll be sidelined for a while, and given his 5.74 ERA he wouldn't seem to be guaranteed a rotation spot once he's deemed ready. Of course, the Twins aren't exactly teeming with options.
Mon, May 22, 2017 05:36:00 PM

Twins prospect Nick Gordon went 2-for-4 on Sunday for Double-A Chattanooga.

Both of Gordon's hits were doubles, and he scored two runs for good measure. He had been in a mini-slump coming into the game, but the overall numbers (.859 OPS) tell the story of how good the former first-round pick has been. You probably won't see him in 2017, but it's not longer a foregone conclusion that he won't get big-league time this year.

Phil Hughes will be placed on the 10-day disabled list with stiffness in his throwing shoulder.

Hughes gave up five runs -- including three homers -- over just four innings in Sunday's loss to the Royals. He said after the game that he's feeling "a lot of the same symptoms I was experiencing last year" prior to surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, but more should be known after he's examined on Monday. Hughes has struggled with a 5.74 ERA over nine starts this season.

Max Kepler blasted a two-run homer, powering the Twins to a 8-4 victory over the Royals in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.

The Twins fell behind early 2-0, but quickly turned the tables on Ian Kennedy in the bottom of the first inning. Kepler followed shortly after with a two-run blast of his own to put the Twins ahead to stay. He finished the night 1-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and is now hitting .260/.358/.433 with four homers and 16 RBI on the season.
Sun, May 21, 2017 08:56:00 PM

Robbie Grossman socked his fourth dinger of the season on Sunday as the Twins took the nightcap of their doubleheader against the Royals.

Grossman's two-run blast off of Ian Kennedy tied the score in the first inning and the Twins would never look back. He finished the day 2-for-4 and is now hitting an impressive .268/.413/.433 with four homers and 14 RBI on the year.
Sun, May 21, 2017 08:52:00 PM

Chris Gimenez crushed his first home run of the season as the Twins beat the Royals in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.

His solo shot in the fourth inning increased the Twins' advantage to 6-3. He finished the afternoon 1-for-4 and is now hitting .200/.321/.333 with three RBI in his limited action this season.
