Daniel Wright will make a spot start for the Angels on Thursday against the Rays.

Wright is going to fill in for Alex Meyer, who landed on the disabled list Wednesday with a back injury. Wright owns a 5.54 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in three appearances -- one start -- this season at the major league level. He's not an appealing fantasy streamer.

Angels recalled RHP Brooks Pounders from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Pounders has allowed four earned runs in 3 2/3 innings this season at the major league level. He will work in a low-leverage relief role for Anaheim.

Angels placed RHP Alex Meyer on the 10-day disabled list with a back injury.

Meyer felt some tightness in his back after allowing four runs over four innings Saturday in a loss to the Mets, and that tightness returned in his between-starts bullpen session on Tuesday. Daniel Wright will take his spot in the rotation Thursday against the Rays. Meyer has no timetable yet, but this doesn't sound like a major injury.

Matt Shoemaker allowed three hits over 6 1/3 innings and combined with three relievers on a shutout of the Rays on Tuesday.

Shoemaker has won three straight. He's sporting a 3.23 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 47 1/3 innings over his last seven starts.

Mike Trout hit his 15th homer and walked Tuesday against the Rays.

Trout hit his 15th homer on June 25, his 75th game, last year. It took him 42 games this season.

Andrelton Simmons went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk against the Rays on Tuesday.

Simmons struggled in the first half of May, but he is 10-for-20 with five extra-base hits in his last five games. At this rate, he'll probably be the Angels' cleanup hitter tomorrow.
Tue, May 23, 2017 10:24:00 PM

Cameron Maybin went 2-for-3 with a homer, two walks and a steal to lead the Angels past the Rays 3-2 on Monday.

Maybin is 10-for-11 in steals this year. For that reason, he has mixed-league value as long as he continues to play regularly and hit somewhere near the top of the order for the Angels.
Mon, May 22, 2017 11:46:00 PM

J.C. Ramirez allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings Monday in a win over the Rays.

Ramirez gave up homers to Corey Dickerson and Logan Morrison in the first inning, but none of the other four hits he allowed hurt him. He's cut back on the walks this month and is succeeding without racking up many strikeouts (13 in 25 2/3 innings). He's probably going to give up too many homers to keep winning with that kind of strikeout rate, but at least he has a strong defense behind him.
Mon, May 22, 2017 11:45:00 PM

Bud Norris recorded four outs in a one-run game for his fourth save Monday against the Rays.

Norris struck out three of the six hitters he faced. The Angels had him enter in the eighth tonight even though he had just thrown an inning Sunday. He might be unavailable Tuesday, which could lead to a save chance for David Hernandez.
Mon, May 22, 2017 11:42:00 PM

Danny Espinosa is not in Monday's lineup against the Rays.

Nolan Fontana will get the nod at second base in his major league debut. Espinosa went 1-for-3 with two walks on Sunday, but he's batting just .152/.242/.280 through 42 games this season.
Mon, May 22, 2017 03:24:00 PM

Albert Pujols (hamstring) has returned to the Angels' lineup Monday against the Rays.

Pujols sat out the entire weekend series against the Mets while dealing with a minor hamstring strain. He's back in the DH spot on Monday while Jefry Marte is starting at first base.

Angels recalled INF Nolan Fontana from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Fontana will replace C.J. Cron on the active roster. The 25-year-old was claimed off waivers from the Astros over the winter and was batting .265/.374/.426 with five home runs and 25 RBI through 38 games this season in Triple-A.

Angels optioned 1B C.J. Cron to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Cron gets the boot one day after hitting a grand slam against the Mets. The 27-year-old has missed time with a foot injury this season while batting just .232/.281/.305 through 24 games. Still, he didn't get much of a leash after putting up a .792 OPS (115 OPS+) last season. The Angels can mix and match at first base with Luis Valbuena, Jefry Marte, and Albert Pujols.

According to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register, Doug Fister's contract with the Angels includes an out-clause if he's not in the majors by June 21.

Fister signed a major league deal with the Angels last Thursday, but he'll spend some time in the minors to get tuned up to join the rotation. If all goes well, he should be ready around the middle of June. According to Chris Cotillo of SBNation.com, Fister will receive a pro-rated base salary of $1.75 million in the majors, with the chance for $1.2 million with incentives.

Mike Trout went 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBI, two walks, a stolen base, and two runs scored in the Angels' 12-5 rout of the Mets on Sunday.

Trout launched a two-run homer off Mets starter Tommy Milone in the top of the second inning and added an RBI double in the top of the third. The best player in baseball is slashing .350/.466/.757 with 14 home runs, 34 RBI, nine stolen bases, and 31 runs scored in 40 games this season.
