Edwin Encarnacion homered twice Tuesday to propel the Indians past the Reds 8-7.

It was only a matter of time before Encarnacion figured this out. He's still striking out more than usual, but he has four homers and two doubles in his last seven games.

Carlos Carrasco gave up four runs in 6 1/3 innings Tuesday in a no-decision versus the Reds.

Carrasco left his last start with pectoral muscle tightness and was given an extra couple of days off before pitching tonight. He was wild in this one, walking four and hitting two batters. Still, it would have been a quality start had Terry Francona not asked him to face the top of the lineup a fourth time in the seventh inning.

Andrew Miller picked up four outs and notched his third win Tuesday against the Reds.

We figured the Indians would manage Miller's innings this year in the hopes of having him at peak form in October. It hasn't really been the case thus far, though; he's thrown 22 1/3 innings through 44 games. He's been outstanding, of course, allowing just one run to date. It has to be hard for Terry Francona to resist the temptation to throw him into every close game.

Jose Ramirez's dreadful May continued Tuesday, as he went 0-for-4 against the Reds.

Ramirez is just 13-for-67 with no homers this month after hitting .330 with six homers in April. Consider it a correction; he entered tonight with the same .825 OPS that he finished last year with.

Carlos Santana will make another start in right field Tuesday against the Reds.

Santana had quite the scare in right field on Monday, but fortunately he's fine. He'll move back to first base on Wednesday when the series shifts to Cleveland.

Lonnie Chisenhall is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Reds.

He'll take a seat against left-hander Amir Garrett. Bradley Zimmer is also on the bench with Carlos Santana playing right field under National League rules. Daniel Robertson is starting in center field.

Indians signed OF David Lough to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Columbus.

Lough was recently released by the Tigers, but it didn't take him long to find a new opportunity. The 31-year-old appeared in 30 games with the Phillies last season and owns a .254/.300/.371 batting line over 342 games in the majors. He'll provide some outfield depth in the minors.

Josh Tomlin gave up five runs -- four earned -- in 6 1/3 innings Monday in a loss to the Reds.

Tomlin has been bad enough this season that he actually lowered his ERA in this one; he's now 2-6 with a 6.70 ERA. The Indians have to be giving serious consideration to bumping him from the rotation when Corey Kluber returns.
Mon, May 22, 2017 11:28:00 PM

Jason Kipnis hit his fourth homer to give the Indians their only run in Monday's loss to the Reds.

Kipnis has hit in eight straight since the Indians inserted him into the leadoff spot, going 13-for-35 with four homers during the stretch. Oddly, he has 10 RBI and just five runs scored to date as a leadoff man.

Carlos Carrasco (pectoral) will start Tuesday in Cincinnati.

Carrasco exited his last outing with tightness in his left pectoral area, but he threw his between-starts bullpen session with no issues. "He's in a really good spot," Indians pitching coach Mikey Callaway said. "He feels great. His bullpen was outstanding the other day. We're going to lean on him a lot the rest of the season, so a couple extra days doesn't really hurt if you can get them."

Corey Kluber (back) has officially been cleared to begin a rehab assignment on Thursday at Triple-A Columbus.

Kluber got the go-ahead after completing a bullpen session Monday. He's slated to throw 70-75 pitches for Columbus before rejoining the Indians' rotation next week if all goes well. "We don't want this recurring," pitching coach Mickey Callaway said. "We need our ace out there every day, and we think we went with the right approach." Mike Clevinger has been filling in for Kluber and doing a great job with a 1.56 ERA.

Indians sent RHP Carlos Frias outright to Triple-A Columbus.

Frias had been designated for assignment, but he cleared waivers and has accepted an outright assignment to remain in the organization. He's posted a 9.00 ERA through 12 appearances in Triple-A this season.
Mon, May 22, 2017 03:53:00 PM

Carlos Santana will start in right field Monday against the Reds in Cincinnati.

Santana will be pushed to right field with the designated hitter unavailable under National League rules. This will be Santana's fourth start in right field this season. Edwin Encarnacion is starting at first base and Bradley Zimmer is on the bench.

Indians prospect Francisco Mejia homered on Sunday for Double-A Akron.

It was the third homer of the year for the switch-hitting catcher. After establishing himself as one of the best catching prospects in baseball, Mejia has continued to hit in 2017, and he's shown more power than anticipated in the process. He's also a competent defender with a strong throwing arm behind the plate, so you don't have to worry about him moving positions. If he's still available in your dynasty league, you should pick him up immediately, and make fun of your friends for not doing so earlier.
Mon, May 22, 2017 01:42:00 PM

Yan Gomes homered and drove in five runs on Sunday, leading the Indians to an 8-6 victory over the Astros.

Gomes got the Tribe on the board with a run-scoring double in the second inning. He blew the game open by taking Joe Musgrove deep for a three-run shot the following inning. He was also drilled with the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Gomes finished the afternoon 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and is now hitting .267/.359/.456 with three homers and 11 RBI on the year.
