Alvaro Negredo and Calum Chambers have said their goodbyes to the Riverside Stadium and now depart after finishing their season-long loan spells with Middlesbrough.

Negredo, who ended the season as the club's top scorer with 10 goals in all competitions, heads back Liga La outfit Valencia after making 39 appearances in total. While 31-year-old didn't have the strongest campaign, he managed to account for roughly 37 percent of Middlesbrough's 27 Premier League goals. Meanwhile, Chambers played a key role at the back after arriving from Arsenal in late September. The 22-year-old featured 26 times for Boro and helped them to the 10th best defensive record in the Premier League, while playing in both central and wide roles.

Jordan Rhodes will complete a permanent transfer to Sheffield Wednesday this summer despite rumors the on-loan striker could return to Middlesbrough.

The 27-year-old joined Sheffield Wednesday on an initial loan deal during the January transfer window, with the agreement that a £10m permanent transfer will become effective this summer. Following the Owl's promotion play-off semi-final penalty shootout defeat, in which Rhodes opted against taking a spot-kick, rumors have circulated that the clubs could reverse the agreement. However, the event has not changed the Owls plans to follow through and complete his permanent capture, according to a Boro spokesman. Rhodes, who arrived at the Riverside Stadium from Blackburn in January 2016, scored three goals in 20 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday this term.

Patrick Bamford scored his first goal since rejoining Middlesbrough in January, but it was all for not as they fell 2-1 to Southampton at the Riverside Stadium.

Bamford, who arrived from Chelsea during the January window, headed in a well-struck Viktor Fischer corner at the near post in the 73rd minute to make it 2-1. However, his first-ever Premier League goal was nothing more than a consolation strike as Boro suffered their ninth loss at the Riverside this season. Southampton controlled the chances and flow of the match throughout, with Jay Rodgriuez scoring the opener just before the half and substitute Nathan Redmond doubling the lead shortly after the restart. While Bamford's late header and a missed penalty by Shane Long did spark a glimmer of hope, the hosts could not find an equalizer in their final home match before dropping back down to the Championship.

Middlesbrough will once again be without Victor Valdes and Gaston Ramirez for Saturday's visit of Southampton.

Caretaker manager Steve Agnew revealed on Thursday that Valdes is still struggling with an ongoing rib injury, while Ramirez is dealing with a pelvic problem that kept him out of Monday's defeat at Chelsea. The news means Brad Guzan will make his seventh-straight start in place of the injured Valdes, with Adama Traore and Cristian Stuani the leading candidates to fill in for Ramirez. Elsewhere, defender Daniel Ayala is also expected to miss out. "Dani Ayala has started jogging again but I’ll don’t think he’ll make it," Agnew added.

The future of Middlesbrough goalkeeper Victor Valdes future has been cast into doubt amid rumors that the Spaniard may have a relegation release clause in his current deal.

Valdes, currently out injured, has kept eight clean sheets from 28 appearances this season and has a year left on his contract at Middlesbrough. But, in the wake of the club's relegation from the Premier League on Monday, reports claim Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola - who managed Valdes during his spell at Barcelona - is interested in bringing the 35-year-old to the Etihad Stadium next season. The connection with Guardiola aside, Boro may well be tempted to let Valdes leave given the cost it would likely take to keep him in the Championship next season and the rise of Academy starlet Connor Ripley. Ripley enjoyed a stellar campaign out on loan this term, keeping 18 clean sheets for Oldham Athletic and earning a place in the League One Team of the Season.

Middlesbrough will join Sunderland in the Championship next season after suffering a 3-0 defeat at Chelsea on Monday night.

Boro traveled to Chelsea knowing that anything less than a win would see them sent down on Monday but fresh off an impressive performance at the weekend, as they drew 2-2 with Manchester City. However, with their Premier League future on the line, Steve Agnew's side were thoroughly overmatched at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea began the match on the front foot, forcing a splendid save by Brad Guzan inside the opening minute, and needed just 23 minutes to take the lead. Diego Costa was first to strike, slotting a right-footed strike through the legs of Guzan, while Marcos Alonso and Nemanja Matic sealed the visitor's fate with nutmeg finishes of their own in the 34th and 64th minute. The defeat confirms relegation for Middlesbrough, who sit seven points adrift with two games remaining.

Middlesbrough, currently six points from safety, could be without first-choice goalkeeper Victor Valdes for Monday night's clash with Chelsea.

The absence of Valdes would be a big blow for Boro as they head to Stamford Bridge knowing that anything less than a win could send them down on Monday. Steve Agnew confirmed in his pre-match press conference that the Spaniard is still struggling to overcome a rib injury that has forced him to miss the last matches. If Valdes is unable to play, then Brad Guzan will be in between the posts against Chelsea.

Grant Leadbitter and Adlene Guedioura are expected to be available for Monday's tough test against Chelsea.

The return of Leadbitter and Guedioura is a boost to Middlesbrough's depth, with Gaston Ramirez ruled out and the club in need of a win to kept their survival hopes alive. Although Leadbitter hasn't played since the 2-1 defeat by Arsenal and Guedioura has found playing time elusive since joining the club, the duo will be in contention to make the matchday squad after training this week. However, their fantasy value is very limited considering Agnew will likely name an unchanged squad coming off a strong performance against Manchester City on Sunday.

Gaston Ramirez has picked up a pelvic problem and won't be available for Monday's match with Chelsea.

Ramirez has not played since picking up a straight red card on April 22 against Bournemouth, as the Uruguayan was left out of the matchday 18-man squad for the 2-2- draw with Manchester City after serving a one match ban. While Steve Agnew hinted that the decision to leave Ramirez out of the squad on Sunday was due to disciplinary reasons, the manager confirmed a pelvic problem will keep him on the sidelines for the trip to Stamford Bridge. The absence of Ramirez should result in more playing time for Cristhian Stuani and Adama Traore, boosting each player's fantasy value until the former returns.

Alvaro Negredo led the charge for Middlesbrough in a 2-2 draw with former club Manchester City at the Riverside on Sunday.

The Spaniard once wore sky blue before he left for Valencia, returning to the Premier League to haunt his former club as it looks desperate for a Champions League berth. Negredo gave Middlesbrough the shock lead in the 38th minute, curling an effort off the post that sent the home faithful into a frenzy. After Sergio Aguero equalized from the spot after Maarten de Roon took down Leroy Sane in the box in the 69th, Negredo was back at it. He fought through a crowded penalty area following a free kick and shot a pass through to Calum Chambers for another lead in the 77th. But Gabriel Jesus was able to pull one back to steal a point for City, although a hard-earned point helps Middlesbrough keep pace with 17th-placed Swansea City.

Steve Agnew has confirmed that both Dani Ayala and Grant Leadbitter are doubtful for Sunday's match against Manchester City at the Riverside Stadium.

Ayala was forced off after twisting his ankle during Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Sunderland while Leadbitter missed the last two matches because of a hamstring injury, putting their availability in question. If the pair is unable to play, then Fabio and Adam Clayton will likely be handed starts. Middlesbrough cannot be relegated this weekend but sit six points from safety with five matches remaining, meaning Agnew's side must take at least a point to keep their slime survival hopes alive.

Marten de Doon scored his fifth of the season as Middlesbrough won their first match of 2017, defeating Sunderland 1-0 in the Tees-Wear derby.

De Roon's goal, just the 13th scored by Boro at the Riverside this season, snatched an early lead in a gritty relegation-themed derby between the bottom two. While goals have been hard to find for the club this term, their opener was well taken. Adam Forshaw's ball over the top found De Roon, who controlled with his chest, poked a shot past the charging Jordan Pickford. The hosts looked vulnerable after going in front but managed to hold on and hand Steve Agnew his first win since taking over from the sacked Aitor Karanka. The result means Middlesbrough sit second-bottom, six points from safety, and can't be relegated this weekend. However, they will close out the season against Manchester City, Chelsea, Southampton and Liverpool.

Victor Valdes is the only expected injury absentee for Middlesbrough who face north east rivals Sunderland at the Riverside on Wednesday.

Speaking ahead of the Tees/Wear derby, Head Coach Steve Agnew revealed Grant Leadbitter and Marten de Roon were on track to recover from respective hamstring and ankle injuries in time to face the Black Cats. Leadbitter did not to travel to Bournemouth on Saturday as a precaution due to muscular tightness, while De Roon was replaced during a first half mauling because of a problem with his ankle. But, the news from today's press conference today was good and Agnew provided a positive update: "Victor Valdes has a rib injury so will miss out [but] Grant Leadbitter and Marten de Roon have trained this morning. Everyone else is fit." The only other player expected to miss out is Gaston Ramirez, who picked up two needless yellow cards - the Uruguay international will serve a one-match ban.

Middlesbrough will be without Gaston Ramirez for Wednesday's home game against Sunderland after his dismissal during the 4-0 loss at Bournemouth.

The absence of Ramirez is a big blow ahead of the Riverside edition of Tees-Wear derby, as Middlesbrough is nine points from safety with just five matches remaining. The Uruguayan attacking midfielder was sent off against Bournemouth for a pair of bookable offenses, the first for a clear dive in the area and second after a dangerous lunge on Marc Pugh in the 19th minute of the match. Although the second yellow seemed harsh considering there wasn't much contact, the reckless intent of the challenge was rightly booked by the referee. Steve Agnew is expected to start Adama Traore with Ramirez unavailable, while Adam Forshaw could also be recalled with defensive midfielders Marten de Roon (ankle) and Grant Leadbitter (hamstring) both in doubt.
