The Detroit Free Press considers LG Laken Tomlinson's roster spot in jeopardy.

Tomlinson made double-digit starts his first two seasons, but is coming off a down 2016. With the Lions adding T.J. Lang and Graham Glasgow expected to win the starting the left guard job, he could face competition for a backup role. Tomlinson is set to make $2.3 million in the third year of his rookie deal.

Lions coach Jim Caldwell expects Ameer Abdullah (foot) to be ready for OTAs.

"He’ll be able to, at some point, work out there on the field this spring. So we’ll see where he is," Caldwell said. "Obviously, we know what he can do. He’ll bounce back and play well for us. He’ll be fine." Abdullah was medically cleared earlier this month, but it sounds like he could be limited at OTAs. The Lions haven't ruled out upgrading on Abdullah in the draft.

Falcons CB Desmond Trufant (chest) is expected to be ready for training camp.

Trufant will be held out of OTAs, but there's not much concern over his status. The Falcons are planning to extend him before the start of the season. Despite coming off an injury-shortened 2016, Trufant could command top-10 corner money.

NFL suspended free agent SS T.J. McDonald the first eight games of 2017 for violating the substance abuse policy.

The suspension stems from his 2016 DUI. McDonald recently visited Miami, but hasn't had much free agent interest. The eight-game ban is a major hit to his chances of signing with a team. McDonald wouldn't count against the 53-man roster until Week 9 if he lands a contract.

The Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson confirms suspended WR Martavis Bryant is expected to be reinstated.

A previous report said Bryant's return is imminent. Bryant will be 60 days removed from applying for reinstatement this week. It sounds like there's still not a firm timetable on when a decision will be announced, but all signs point to him getting reinstated.

Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said Cordarrelle Patterson will have a role on offense.

"Really excited about ‘CP.’ He’s a gifted athlete, once he touches the ball he can score from anywhere," Del Rio said. "He’s not just a special teams guy, we’re going to integrate him in our offense and I think he’s a dynamic playmaker." Patterson doesn't project for more than a gadget role behind Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree, but is going to push Seth Roberts for sub-package targets. He should also see a few carries at running back.

The Miami Herald expects the Dolphins to extend contract-year WR Jarvis Landry before training camp.

Miami has yet to open talks with Landry, but have made it clear they plan to extend him. The Dolphins have enough cap space to get a deal done despite re-signing Kenny Stills. Miami reportedly wants to keep Landry, Stills, and DeVante Parker together through 2020. Landry is targeting $11 million annually.

The Beaver County Times' Chris Bradford reports Steelers suspended WR Martavis Bryant's reinstatement is "imminent."

Bryant applied for reinstatement back on January 28, and by rule, the league has 60 days to make a decision. That would put the deadline at this week. The Steelers have kept quiet on Bryant's possible return, but all accounts have suggested Bryant has stayed on the straight-and-narrow while away from the team. In his time away, Bryant has reportedly added 25 pounds of muscle to his 6'4 frame and is in "excellent condition" as he works as a volunteer high school coach.

Saints signed QB Chase Daniel, formerly of the Eagles, to a one-year contract.

Daniel goes back to where it all began. Entering his ninth season, Daniel spent the first four years of his career in New Orleans as Drew Brees' backup after making the team as an UDFA. He had a three-year stay in Kansas City before a one-year detour sent him to Philadelphia in 2016. The Eagles cut him earlier this month. Daniel, 30, had hoped to land a chance to start somewhere, but it's never happened for him. He could make Luke McCown expendable.

Speaking Wednesday, Browns coach Hue Jackson said new Patriots RB Rex Burkhead will "flourish" in New England.

"He's very talented," Jackson said. "He's going to get his opportunity now, and he's going to flourish. He's a really good player. A really good player. He's very versatile because he's a good runner, a good pass-catcher. He's a good blocker. He brings a lot of different elements to that football team." Jackson's opinion is notable because he was Burkhead's position coach and OC in Cincinnati before taking the Browns job. Burkhead's hype continues to build.

Saints re-signed TE John Phillips to a one-year contract.

Phillips is purely a blocking tight end for New Orleans.

Waiver claim DE Scott Crichton failed his physical with the Bills and is a free agent.

Crichton was claimed off waivers from the Vikings earlier this week. He missed all of last season, spending it on I.R. after being waived/injured during the summer. The former No. 72 overall pick has yet to show much.

WKBW Buffalo's Joe Buscaglia believes Bills MLB Preston Brown could be available for trade.

Since being drafted No. 73 overall in 2014, Brown has appeared in all 48 games, making 46 starts. He was ex-coach Rex Ryan's signal-caller as a 3-4 inside linebacker, and Ryan long praised Brown, saying he believed Brown was "going to be a star." Well, Brown has never really been a playmaker, with just one career sack, three picks, and two forced fumbles. With new coach Sean McDermott shifting to a 4-3 and Reggie Ragland expected to be the middle linebacker, Brown doesn't have a starting spot. He has one year left on his rookie deal.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Patriots "inquired" about Richard Sherman's availability before they signed Stephon Gilmore in free agency.

RapSheet adds that "others" asked about Sherman, though those teams' identities aren't known. New England knew it was losing Logan Ryan in free agency and possibly could also deal away Malcolm Butler, so Bill Belichick and Co. rang up the Seahawks to ask about Sherman, who seems to be wearing out his welcome a bit in Seattle. Both GM John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll have admitted a trade has been "talked about," but it's ultimately highly unlikely to happen. Acquiring Sherman would probably cost a first-rounder plus more.

Vikings FS Harrison Smith is recovering from offseason ankle surgery.

Smith suffered a Grade 3 high-ankle sprain in Week 13, which is the most severe sprain one can suffer. He missed the next two games before returning for the final two. Expect Smith to be ready well ahead of training camp.
