Royals placed RHP Nate Karns on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to May 20, with a right elbow injury.

Karns experienced a buildup of fluid in his right elbow during his last start Friday against the Twins. He's eligible to return next Tuesday, which would be his scheduled day to pitch, so it's quite possible that he will only miss one turn in the Royals' rotation. Miguel Almonte is starting in Karns' place on Thursday against the Yankees.

Royals activated OF Alex Gordon from the paternity leave list.

Gordon was excused from the club on Sunday to welcome a new member of his family. He returns Wednesday to a rough .175/.294/.212 batting line.

Christian Yelich (hip) said Wednesday that he expects to avoid the disabled list.

Yelich exited Tuesday's game with right hip flexor tightness and he is not in the Marlins' starting lineup Wednesday afternoon in Oakland, but the issue is not believed to be serious. Marlins president Michael Hill echoed Yelich's optimism. Consider the center fielder day-to-day.

Avisail Garcia (flu) is back in the White Sox starting lineup Wednesday afternoon in Arizona.

He'll start in right field and bat fifth against Diamondbacks right-hander Randall Delgado after missing Tuesday's game with a mild case of the flu. Garcia boasts a .971 OPS with eight home runs and 34 RBI over 43 games this season for Chicago.
May 24 - 1:40 PM

Athletics purchased the contract of RHP Zach Neal from Triple-A Nashville.

Neal will join the Oakland bullpen ahead of Wednesday afternoon's series finale against the Marlins. The right-hander was sporting a 3.89 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 15/4 K/BB ratio in 34 2/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level.
May 24 - 1:37 PM

Athletics placed RHP Bobby Wahl on the 10-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain.

Wahl struggled in a two-inning appearance Tuesday night against the Marlins and apparently injured his throwing shoulder along the way. It's unclear how long he will be sidelined. Zach Neal has been called up from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding roster move.
May 24 - 1:35 PM

Yonder Alonso (wrist) is out of the Athletics' starting lineup Wednesday afternoon against the Marlins.

Alonso suffered a bruised right wrist Tuesday when he was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning. X-rays turned up negative and he will probably be available off the bench for the A's in their series finale versus the Fish. Ryon Healy is starting at first base and Khris Davis is serving as Oakland's designated hitter on Wednesday.
May 24 - 1:17 PM

Christian Yelich (hip) is out of the Marlins' starting lineup Wednesday versus the Athletics.

No surprise after he left Tuesday night's game with a right hip flexor injury. Yelich is considered day-to-day for now. Marcell Ozuna is in center field, Tyler Moore is in left field, and Ichiro Suzuki is in right field on Wednesday afternoon at Oakland Coliseum. Giancarlo Stanton is serving as the Marlins' designated hitter and will bat second against A's right-hander Sonny Gray.
May 24 - 1:13 PM

Mariners designated RHP Chris Heston for assignment.

The move clears a 40-man roster spot for outfielder Andrew Aplin, who was acquired from the Astros on Wednesday morning. Heston has allowed 12 runs -- 11 earned -- over just five innings this season at the MLB level.
May 24 - 12:39 PM

Mariners acquired OF Andrew Aplin from the Astros for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Aplin was designated for assignment by Houston earlier this week to clear a 40-man roster spot for Jordan Jankowski. The 26-year-old outfielder was batting .250 with a .720 OPS in 105 plate appearances this season for Triple-A Fresno. He'll be organizational outfield depth for Seattle at Triple-A Tacoma.
May 24 - 12:38 PM

Giants 1B/OF prospect Chris Shaw has been promoted from Double-A Richmond to Triple-A Sacramento.

Shaw earned the level jump by batting .301/.390/.511 with six home runs and 29 RBI over his first 37 games this season at Double-A. The 23-year-old first baseman and corner outfielder appears to be on the fast track with the Giants, who selected him 31st overall out of Boston College in 2015. He could make his major league debut later this summer.
May 24 - 12:35 PM

Howie Kendrick (oblique) is set to begin a minor league rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Kendrick received clearance to play in minor league games after taking outdoor batting practice on Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park. He's been out since April 15, so the Phillies will probably have him stay at Triple-A through the weekend to get properly tuned up. Kendrick was batting .333/.395/.487 over his first 43 plate appearances this season with the Phils. The versatile veteran should get something close to everyday playing time when he returns.
May 24 - 12:32 PM

Orioles released OF Michael Bourn.

Bourn exercised his opt-out Tuesday after the O's couldn't find a spot for him on the major league roster. The veteran outfielder was batting .220/.373/.317 in 51 plate appearances this season with Triple-A Norfolk. Again a free agent, he'll likely have to settle for another minor league deal.
May 24 - 11:49 AM

Daniel Wright will make a spot start for the Angels on Thursday against the Rays.

Wright is going to fill in for Alex Meyer, who landed on the disabled list Wednesday with a back injury. Wright owns a 5.54 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in three appearances -- one start -- this season at the major league level. He's not an appealing fantasy streamer.
May 24 - 11:27 AM

Blue Jays placed OF Anthony Alford on the 10-day disabled list with a left hamate fracture.

That's an injury that usually requires 4-6 weeks of rest and rehab, sometimes much longer. Alford was just promoted to Toronto last Friday and collected his first major league hit -- a double -- on Tuesday night at Miller Park. Unfortunately for the last-place Blue Jays, the 22-year-old top outfield prospect will rack up service time while he is on the MLB disabled list.
