Jon Lester (hamstring) is throwing a simulated game to live batters on Saturday morning.

He is performing agility drills between batters to test his legs. Lester is on the injured list with a left hamstring strain. The injury is not expected to keep him out of action for long. If he recovers well from the simulated game he could return to the Cubs' rotation later this week. He has a 1-0 record and 2.57 ERA in three starts this year.

Jon Jay is traveling with the White Sox but is still unable to run or participate in game action.

The veteran outfielder has yet to play in a game this season. He came down with hip soreness late in spring training and has been on the shelf ever since. He is able to take batting practice and play catch but has not been cleared to run. The 34-year-old can still help a major league team but is unlikely to generate much in the way of fantasy value this year (or ever). He split last year between the Royals and Diamondbacks while generating a .268 batting average with three home runs, 40 RBI, 74 runs and four steals in 143 games.

Gio Gonzalez can declare his intention to opt out of his contract with the Yankees today and is likely to do so per Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Gonzalez can officially request a promotion to the big league club today, then the Yankees will have 48 hours to grant his request or release him from his contract. He signed a minor league contract with the Yankees last month and the deal included an April 20th opt-out. Gonzalez is expected to opt out if not promoted today. He has made three minor league starts and the results were not good -- he allowed 10 earned runs in 15 innings. On the other hand he does have a long track record of success in the major leagues, so if he hits the market again this week he is very likely to find some suitors. He went 10-11 with a 4.21 ERA in 32 starts for the Nationals and Brewers last year. He went 15-9 with a 2.96 ERA in 32 starts with the Nationals in 2017.

Derek Dietrich hit a two-run homer in the top of the 11th to lead the Reds past the Padres 3-2 on Friday.

It was 1-1 when Dietrich, who had previously entered as a pinch-hitter and stayed in to play second base, untied the game. The Padres came back with one in the bottom of the 11th, but it wasn't enough. Dietrich has five homers and 13 RBI in just 40 at-bats for the Reds. Some AL team really should have signed him as a DH and occasional infield option. He's only getting as much playing time as he is with the Reds because Scooter Gennett got hurt.
Apr 20 - 2:17 AM

Anthony DeSclafini allowed one run over six innings Friday in a no-decision against the Padres.

DeSclafini struck out six and walked just one. He threw only 80 pitches before the Reds opted to lift him, even though his spot in the order wasn't coming up. DeSclafini has had two good and two bad starts so far this season, leaving him with a 5.59 ERA. Better days should be ahead.
Apr 20 - 2:15 AM

Michael Lorenzen got a one-out save against the Padres on Friday.

It's the fourth career save for Lorenzen, who took over for Zach Duke with the tying run on first in the 11th inning tonight. He hadn't pitched in five days, so he was plenty fresh. The Reds seem to be just as interested in utilizing him as a center fielder as they do a reliever right now; he played three innings out there on Thursday.
