Tuesday, May 09, 2017

Welcome to Playing the Tips!

Each week this will be the one-stop resource to soak in all the picks from our fantasy staffers at

Here is a quick rundown of what sites and formats we will cover each week:

Page 1 will feature all of our selections for and Yahoo! Fantasy Golf.

Page 2 will go over One-and-Done as well as Daily Fantasy Golf picks.

Page 3 will take a look at the European Tour, with the Fantasy Race to Dubai.

Before we look ahead, Mo Yoshimoto takes a look at last week's action in his Wells Fargo Championship Recap.

Now for the picks... Fantasy Golf

Last Week: 220.5 points

Last Week Rank: 10,922

Daniel Berger ($24,000)
Martin Kaymer ($20,300)
Russell Henley ($19,000)
Shane Lowry ($14,100)
Graeme McDowell ($11,500)
Ryan Palmer ($10,800)

ANALYSIS:  Trying to blend recent form with course history here. One thing is certain, this team can rack up birdies in bunches.

Ryan O’Sullivan

Last Week: 265.55 points

Last Week Rank: 7,782

Sergio Garcia ($33,300)

Rory McIlroy ($33,300)

Lee Westwood ($19,000)

David Hearn ($5,300)

Ben Martin ($4,800)

Brian Gay ($4,300)

ANALYSIS:  Taking a few more risks, Ryan is giving himself a lot of upside with a stars and scrubs type of roster construction.

Mori Yoshimoto

Last Week: 332.0 points

Last Week Rank: 2,457

Justin Thomas ($32,800)

Brooks Koepka ($29,200)

Kevin Kisner ($22,600)

Ben Martin ($4,800)

Zac Blair ($4,800)

Jonas Blixt ($4,300)

ANALYSIS: A top-heavy approach similar to Ryan's. Mo is banking on the output of his wildcards at the bottom. In a large-entry contest like this format, not a bad approach.

*Make sure you check our Twitter accounts for any updates before the first tee ball flies on Thursday. Change in weather, tee times, etc. can always lead to last-minute changes and we will let you know through our social media channels.

This week's Strategy: The weather looks to be cooperating, so there shouldn't be any major concerns with tee-time waves.

Group A

Jason Day (10): In a format like Yahoo, it's not the end of the world if you miss out on a big win from a superstar. For that reason, I am willing to pass on DJ (poor course history) and Rory (back tightness). We only have 10 starts for season for each of these stars, so this will just save those starts for me. Instead, I will use the defending champ who arrives a bit out of form for his lofty standards, but is finally getting back to a positive routine after a health scare with his mother.

Adam Scott (6): Leads Group A in terms of Yahoo Scoring at THE PLAYERS (last 5 years).

Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson

Group B

Jordan Spieth (6): Flying a little under the radar this week. He finished T4 in his 2014 debut here but has missed the cut in two return visits. His course management skills are too good to let that happen again.

Francesco Molinari (6): Flew out of the gates last week so I will go right back to the well. Has three top 10s here in six tries. I'm going to start him in my lineup and hope for another quick start on a course he knows very well.

Hideki Matsuyama (7): One of the best ball-strikers on TOUR, that plays nicely at TPC Sawgrass where reliable tee-to-green game is very important.

Justin Thomas (9): Calls this his favorite event of the year. It's easy to see why as his first two visits have yielded finishes of T24 and T3.

Justin Rose, Matt Kuchar, Paul Casey, Kevin Chappell

Group C

Martin Kaymer (8): He's 8-for-8 here including a win in 2014. Banking on that reliability as I take a small risk with my second C golfer.

Tyrrell Hatton (9): A superb fit on paper, and should get overlooked by the masses. If he takes a quick liking to TPC Sawgrass, this pick will gain a lot of ground on the field.

Sergio Garcia, Jon Rahm, Russell Henley
